Re: Where is the Evidence?

In a message dated 5/7/99, Frank Voehl asked for the evidence that
"90% or more of variation is caused by the system." I have also
wondered about the same thing and when I read his message, I had a
thought that IMHO is a good hypothesis for the answer. This insight
lead to two questions that I would like the DEN's help in answering.
My thoughts:
An assumption in the question is that some amount of variation can be
attributed to components outside of the system (the less than 10% of
variation that is not due to the system). If X represents the
contribution to the variation by the system, the question can be
rephrased as: what is the evidence that X is 90% or greater. Now,
letting Y represent the contribution to variation due to components
outside of the system, the total variation can be (simplistically)
represented as X + Y.
My Questions:
1. Using the System of Profound Knowledge, by what method can
evidence be collected to determine the value of X?
2. If I accept, as an axiom, that X=1 (everything is in the system),
will the statement that "X is 90% or more" be more acceptable to
people that do not have the same axiom?
Thank you for your help in learning,
Jon Juneau
