David Oliver, a senior accountant with Marshalls plc in Halifax is in his
first year on the Aurora programme. He writes :

Aurora University are, to my knowledge, the first to offer a "Distance
Learning Course" via the internet on the subject of quality systems.
This course is based upon the philosophy of Dr. Deming. Candidates are
required to hold a degree, since this is a post graduate course and will
lead to a Certificate or Advanced Certificate in Deming Management, with
an opportunity to obtain an MBA after completion of the Advanced
Certificate.

Phase 1 consists of :
1) Deming's System of Profound Knowledge
2) Managing Variation and Work Flow
3) Achieving Purpose through Teamwork
4) Deming- Based Financial Management.

Successful completion of these four courses leads to a Certificate in
Deming Management.

The successful completion of second phase leads to the Advanced
Certificate. It consists of:
5) Deming - based Human Resource Management
6) Creating Customer Value
7) Leading the Deming Transformation.

The candidates on my course were divided into two small teams, and we
were encouraged to talk to one another via the Web Board or the chat
facility. At the beginning of each week, the work for that week was
posted, this involved reading, researching and discussions. Each weeks
work systematically built up to cover the topic. Along with the weekly
work we had to prepare our assignment, this is similar to writing an
article or paper, my first assignment was "An analysis of existing
management practices in my company and how to improve them now and in the
future". The application of the teachings to our own organisations had a
profound impact upon me, it really made me to start to appreciate what
Deming's philosophies are all about and how powerful they really are.

Each subject takes about eight or nine weeks to complete and involves
many discussions via a Web Board where candidates can post their own
ideas, observations, problems and experiences, based on the subject
matter of the week. I have found this aspect fascinating, learning about
other organisations and their problems, all of these being in the States.
I am the only participant from the UK, but despite the distances
involved I have been surprised just how similar many of our problems are.

This course is the most interesting one that I have ever undertaken, but
I have not found it easy. I was surprised at just how much time was
needed, probably something like sixteen hours per week, but I know that
it will be worth the effort. Today, January 18th we start the second
section, Variation and Work Flow and having read the details of the
course I can immediately see just how relevant and important this topic
is for our organisation. Perhaps, the most important aspect of a course
such as this, is the practical application of the theory in your own
working environment, not only does this enhance one's learning, but there
is real potential to make a difference.

For 1999/2000 the Steering Group are planning an exciting programme of
alternating day and evening meetings at around six weekly intervals.
Topics will probably include Tomorrow's Company, Juran and Deming, Six
Sigma Culture Change, and at least one company visit. Dates and more
information in the next month or so. Thanks to all those who have
already contributed ideas -- Its still not too late to do so. All day
meetings give us a lot more scope. And if you would be prepared to host
a day or an evening meeting we'd love to hear from you.
