I think I understand (and agree) with the spirit / meaning behind these
words, but as stated I cannot. It implies that profit indicates the
value of contribution a business makes to society. This is clearly not
so. 

We live in a finite world. Many hugely profitable multinationals are
profiting by (amongst other sins) creating dependency, by poisoning and
plundering our planet and thereby, our children's futures. Open your
eyes, or  read Fritjof Capra's "Turning Point" or Peter Drucker's "Post
Capitalist Society" - then look at Wall Street again.

Profit is a necessary condition, it is not THE measure.
