Some time past (years) I read "Transforming the Organization," Gouillart and
Kelly. It was just okay. However, one thing I did pick up and still use is
the concept of "learning loops." I don't know if they thought it up, I
doubt it. It probably has a solid beginning somewhere. If anyone out there
can elaborate that would be great. Basically, within a system are
"parts/processes" that we know are synergistic in that no part/process acts
independently of any other part. People are involved in this process. An
analysis can be done to determine if the parts/processes are designed in
such a way that they create knowledge and if the system can deliver that
knowledge to those within the system in a way that they learn about how well
the system is functioning and the contributions being made by each of the
parts/processes including their own. If commitment is gained (psychology)
individuals now have the knowledge to engage in improvement, innovation,
etc., without tampering. What interested me was the concept of designing
what I now call "knowledge pathways" as an important part of the system.
