I have found that the use of e-mail to communicate among ad hoc teams to be
very useful.

First, I believe the use of e-mail is a great equalizer. It seems that
people have a tendency to speak up and speak as frankly as one can in a
business environment. Second, the record created can be invaluable. I was in
a five -way conversation regarding an issue concerning heat treatment of
stainless steel. The wealth of information I got from the exercise was
tremendous. The team solved a sticky problem and we were able to create a
lessons learned for all in our corporation.

Lastly, at least for the present e-mail is enough of a novelty that people
actually respond.
