My original point would have been better stated had I made a distinction
between the 3 kinds of process we see in our world:
1. material processes
2. information processes
3. relationship/commitment processes
The methodologies that TQNelson speaks of (Demarco/Yourdan, Coad/Yourdan,
Constantine/Yourdon) all originate in the information process realm. In fact
most of the work that has been done by people to improve process is around
the material and information processes. We have been blind to the world of
processes that center around relationships and commitments - we simply don't
have the distinctions to see it. Thus, we have all sorts of trouble making
the transition from material and information process documentation and the
resulting computer system development to bringing them into new practices in
our organization.
I propose that redesign and improvement of processes form viewpoint of
relationships and commitments is more robust in terms of bringing new
practices to an organization. I do not mean that the realms of material and
information processes are unimportant - on the contrary they are quite
important and they can be enhanced and leveraged by looking at the world of
relatioships and commitments in which we use them.
