What is quality?

Rip's comments reminded me of a quote I'd seen from John Betti from Ford
- "While we were busy arguing about how good the parts had to be, they
were working hard at making all the parts exactly the same" (a quote in
relation to transaxles made by Mazda)...

I think this quote highlights the differences between Quality as a
transcendental term (the "pure" quality of Phaedrus) and quality in a
practical sense as it relates to control charts and measures of "on
target with minimum variation".
