Dear all,

STATISTICS AND ENGINEERING

For many years, a small number of practising engineers has been aware
of the need for effective use of statistical methods in dealing with
certain types of engineering problem. However, there is a feeling
amongst both statistical and engineering communities that the use
of these methods is not nearly so widespread as it should be. Many
organisations which could benefit are failing to do so. A series of
joint discussion meetings is therefore being arranged by the J2
committee of the IEE and the Quality Improvement Committee of the
Royal Statistical Society, with the intention of fostering an
interchange of ideas between engineers and statisticians.

The first meeting will be on WEDNESDAY, 22 SEPTEMBER 1999, at
the Royal Statistical Society's offices in Errol Street, London EC1,
from 2-5pm. The theme of the meeting will be: 'Statistics in
the education of engineers'. Discussion will be led by Mr J.Morrison,
a Fellow of both the IEE and the RSS, whose views on this topic
have been developed in the course of a distinguished career, and
Dr D.Grove, who is well-known as co-author with Tim Davis of
the book 'Engineering Quality and Experimental Design' and who has
wide experience of working with engineers.

The second meeting, on THURSDAY, 7 OCTOBER, at the IEE, Savoy Place,
from 2-5pm, will examine the contribution of basic statistical
techniques to engineering practice. Marion Gerson of the Centre
for Quality Engineering at the UNiversity of Newcastle will lead
the discussion.

Two further meetings will follow: on THURSDAY, 25 NOVEMBER and
WEDNESDAY, 12 JANUARY, when the topics for discussion will be
'Advanced Statistical Methods for Engineers' and 'Statistics
in Engineering: the Manager's Role'.

All interested are very welcome to attend these meetings,
for which there is no charge.
