One of the best introductions to the subject is Donald Wheeler's book,
Understanding Variation: The Key to Managing Chaos.  It's published by SPC
Press, ISBN 0-945320-35-3.  Your bookstore can get it, but it's faster to order
directly from the publisher.  Try their website at www.spcpress.com for prices
and the telephone number (not a secure order site).  We have used this book
extensively as a primer for teaching about variation.
