I like Steven Covey's example:
The managers are managing the process of hacking the way through the jungle. They are developing ever improved hacking tools and methods, and working to keep the hackers happy and productive.
The Leaders climb the tallest tree and check out if they are going in the right direction. Joel Barker calls this "vision" -- setting the direction and priorities, and providing the processes that can make getting there possible. They turn the vision and processes over to the Managers to make it all come together. (much of this is my interpretaion of what Joel Barker and Steven Covey said).
The problem comes when the leaders say, "We're going in the wrong direction!" and the managers say, "Don't bother us. We're busy hacking."
'Good' leaders are able to motivate their managers to work toward the right common goal together.
'Good' managers work togther and get their workers to work together toward that common goal.
