I would like to remind everyone that there is a Deming Medal in the United
States given by the American Society for Quality (ASQ). Submission of the
application is due by 1 November 1999.

The medal honors an individual who, like Dr. Deming, has successfully
combined the application of statistical thinking and management so that
each supports and enhances the other, thus leading to quality in products
and services. The nominee can be anyone in business, consulting, etc. who
fits the description. There are three criteria, in the form of questions,
asked for in the application:

Question 1 asks for evidence of the nominee's understanding in any number
of ways. Some evidence consists of writing books and/or articles on the
topics Dr. Deming taught. Another way might be to teach or have taught
courses on quality technology or management to obtain quality. This may be
taught in an educational institution, company or other setting.

Question 2 looks for evidence of contribution. Some methods of showing
evidence of contribution includes refereed books, papers, and articles
pertaining to the Deming philosophy or any advance to that philosophy.
Again, these are suggestions to the proposer. The proposer may have other
ways of showing the nominee's contribution to the Deming Method.

Question 3 examines how the nominee has applied the theory of management to
effect a transformation or be well underway.

There is more detail on the application. To get an application call
1+800-248-1946 or e-mail to Karen Proseer <kprosser@asq.org> at ASQ. For a
list of past recipients go to <http://www.metro-asq.org/dem_win.htm> . I
would like to stress that the medal is not restricted to statisticians but
is open to anyone in business or those helping business people who match
the requirement.

The nomination form on the web site, listing the past recipients, is not
current. I am no longer the chairman of the committee. Nominations should
now be sent to Dr. Joyce Orsini. Apart from that, the rest of the details
are the same. I would also add that the nomination for last year's
recipient, Dr. Tom Boardman, was submitted by e-mail attachment.
