Variation in Small Batches

Could someone help with the application of SPC to small-batche production?
I am conversing with the owner of a precision machine shop who doesn't do
control charts or other forms of measuring on his machine output because,
he says, his operators often make only two or three of a given part - they
don't have long enough runs, in short. I feel he should be measuring
*something,* perhaps at least their record in meeting promised customer
delivery dates. But is there an SPC application for small batches at a
"country machine shop"? What's the pertinence of variation here? Thanks.
