I agree with Myron's position. I went through a similar dialogue with Dr.
Deming and developed an extensive operational definition (along with Dr.
Laurie Broedling, et al., from the Navy) that Dr. D. accepted "as long as it
was specifically linked to that definition." Over the years, unfortunately, I
have seen that link fade so that TQM is about as well understood (i.e., with
a common, mutually shared understanding and meaning) as the words
"Christian," "Republican," "Democrat," etc.
For that very reason, beginning in the fall of 2000 (the antiquated
administrative process of academia doesn't all ow for quick changes,
customers don't count), the term TQM will no longer title our courses
(content/focus (Deming/SoPK based) remains the same.
