I completely agree with the essence of John Dowd's offering.
Variation is THE keyhole through which can be seen all the elements of what
constitute a means of approaching other aspects of the term 'system'. Were
there never a concept known as variation, it is conceivable to me that
modern business would look entirely different; static, rigid, absolute. In
such a case, mis-application of management's wishes, good, bad or
indifferent, might not ever be challenged. Given the 'right' education
and/or training, management itself might be just another robotic device.
But, variation DOES exist, and how it shapes and transforms modern life can
be the stuff of miracles or disasters. As has been said many times by Den
members, information itself is not knowledge or wisdom, but something less.
What is likely needed is something more. In this case, Deming.
Sincerely,
John Constantine (back from the dead)
