Not to me.

To me statistics includes many specific concepts, some of which would be
included in "understanding variation." When I think of understanding
variation I think of general concepts that everyone in the organization
should truly understand (to the level that their understanding of variation
influences how they view all data).
I could come up with an explanation of why using factorial experiments to
find interactions among variables is part of understanding variation but I do
not think this is really the way people view things.
I think Design of Experiments (DoE), Evolutionary Operations (EVOP) and
Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) are useful aspects of Statistics
that I do not really think of under the label of understanding variation.
I think you could include the concept of robustness in understanding
variation (but again I think this is not something most people tie to
understanding variation). I would see this as the idea that the product or
service would be better able to operate successfully in the real world if the
variation of conditions in which it will actually be used was considered.
There is also plenty of stuff which is considered "statistics" which is not
only useless but actually harmful. I say this because I think that
"statistics," as it is currently understood is not necessarily something we
need to use more. I think there are aspects of statistics that would result
in better managed organizations, however, I think asking most of those with
advanced degrees in statistics would be more harmful than helpful.
I think the resources include in Curious Cat Statistics Connections provide
valuable resources for those interested in statistical thinking and Deming's
System of Profound Knowledge. I am especially excited about the growing
library of documents on various topics of management improvement, including
statistics, that can be found there. I would appreciate any feedback on how
to improve Curious Cat Statistics Connections.
